Speech does matter, and it does harm.
Managing Free Speech and Addressing Racial and Bias Harm
This year in education will be like no other.
We are navigating a challenging political climate, that will impact our classrooms, requiring a nuanced approach that honors diverse viewpoints, while balancing the constitutional rights and wellbeing of our students and staff.
As educators we strive to foster an environment that encourages open dialogue, critical thinking, and mutual respect. This involves being aware of how culture and climate influence classroom dynamics. By promoting a culture of empathy, understanding, and collaboration, educational leaders can help bridge divides, support constructive dialogue and ensure that all students feel valued, seen, and heard, even in the most contentious of times.
This workshop aims to provide a refresher on free speech, and how we address racial and bias harm.
During our time together we will:
Explore the balance between free speech and maintaining a respectful, safe school environment.
Deepen our understanding of racial and bias harm and its impact on individuals and communities.
Refresh our understanding of student rights during walkouts.
Use interactive methods to sharpen our knowledge.
We have three virtual opportunities to engage in this workshop.
